Can someone please answer a daft question...when you buy a laptop...what comes with it in the box?...ie is there a lead to connect to your telephone socket?...if so is there a filter with it as well?...or is it just the laptop?...nothing worse on Christmas day than opening something that doesn't work!
I know I will need a wireless router... but another thing I don't understand is when ordering on-line...the routers are not advertised with them...you get Norton and Office etc...but never a router which to me is fundamental to it's operation!...or is it

If the laptop has a built in modem, it will come with a leads to connect it to the telephone socket. But not many people use dial up access these days. You may get a network cable if you are lucky, otherwise you will probably just get the laptop and a power supply.
You don't "need" a wireless router to use a laptop - Who is your ISP ? Most of them will provide a router as part of the package.0 -
When you buy a laptop, you will get a laptop... and a power charger... and a user manual... and some warranty information. That's pretty much it.
It's for you to buy separately any router, modem, leads and cables you may need, if you do not have them already.0 -
If you don't already have a router or modem of some descripion, then the question that has to be asked is, do you already have a broadband connection? As mentioned above, almost all ISP's offer a free wireless router to new customers now. This will include the phone cable, ethernet cable and usually 2 ADSL filters. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I was annoyed that mine didn't come with a house - after all I can't be expected to stand around in the street using it. Come to that a chair would be handy too and maybe a desk.0

As has been said already, you will normally just get the laptop and power cord, with maybe a warranty card and quick start guide.
Depending on the make you may get a recovery/driver CD/DVD(s), but a lot don't include one now - these usually have some sort of Windows utility to allow you to create a recovery set.
If you have one of these, make sure you create them sooner rather than later (you will need a couple blank DVD's). It's probably not going to go down too well on Christmas morning saying hang on, I just need to create these disks for a couple of hours
If you can, it may be a good idea to test it beforehand and do this sort of thing.0 -

PS: if you expect your new laptop to come with MS Office and Norton, then you're going to be very disappointed on Christmas Day. They often come with a 90 day trial version pre-installed, but certainly not the full versions. No free lunch, and no free laptop

All of which are well worth uninstalling before Christmas too.PS: if you expect your new laptop to come with MS Office and Norton, then you're going to be very disappointed on Christmas Day. They often come with a 90 day trial version pre-installed, but certainly not the full versions.0 -
