If you cancel the DD you'd probably be found to be in breach of contract. They can sue you for the remainder of the money, costs and interest. He seems to admit he made a mistake and thought the course would be good for him, but it wasn't his thing. That's unfortunate but it's not the companies fault, especially as he admits he hasn't been doing the studying expected of him. Contact the company and ask what their cancellation policy is, but it may well be the case that they expect him to pay the full amount now that he has enrolled on the course, and they could hold him to it.
  • he didnt sign up quit his job then didnt study he signed up the company he was working for went into liquidation and he took another job and as for not studying the help isnt there as many others have stated i guess going back to education years after leaving college isnt for everyone .... and yea thats what i said hed probably have to pay for rest of course just wondered if anyone else had heard any different as it seems thousands have been in same boat and gone through watchdog etc.

Personally I think that there is far too man of these companies out there. They use hard selling techniques to sway people, making them think the are being offered the opportunity of a lifetime. It is not on!

It needs to be made clear to people that most of these courses are offered through local colleges at a fraction of the price (and normally funding is available!)

I've been there with these courses (well a family member has) and I know what its like!
  • My partner is in a similar situation... we were not told that he could do the course for free as he was on JSA at the time. We have not had any phone calls or anything from them. Then we wrote to them as it was missold (as advised by the CAB) and the completely ignored it, sending a bog standard "we are so brilliant" letter so we cancelled the DD. After a couple of months we get a letter from a debt collection company saying we owe them £6000. Currently trying to sort that one out. I also emailed a couple of the companies conected to teh college and asked if they were aware of the number of people who were beign missold the course and today I got an email from an irrate Head of Legal and Corporate Services stating:
    Dear Mr. Judd

We have recently received communication from Messrs Yardstick Media, our trading partner, that you wrote to them alleging that you had been enrolled on one of our Domestic Electrical Installer courses.

You also alleged that you were having a lot of problems with us and that you were aware that many hundreds more had similar difficulties. You made further allegations and suggestions to them about our trading methods.

We take such matters very seriously and therefore have begun our investigations. Having checked our records we cannot trace you as a student enrolled with us.

Could you therefore by return of e-mail send to us your college number and current address so that we can proceed/look into this matter further.

Please note that if you are not a student and pretended to be one then this is tantamount to a criminal offence and we will take such action as may be necessary through our Solicitors or otherwise.

We therefore wait to hear from you within 24 hours of the time of this letter.

    Your sincerely

Most annoyed now and dont actually know what to do. It seems another trip to the CAB might be in order :(
