There are many, many, many threads on this subject. Or, there is always this, a mere 1.8 million results.

Or, if the thread runs it will go along these lines:-

    • You need a powerflush
    • No you don't
    • BG charge £800 for this
    • Robdogs, a privateer would only charge £350
    • Put a magnetic filter on it, I did and never looked back etc
    • Can I powerflush myself?
    • Yes, it's easy
    • You don't need a powerflush etc etc
    • Have you bled the radiators?
    • Cor, these plumbers/plummers/plumpers, I'm in the wrong job me
    hth

Thanks for this response - no it doesn't help!

I'll start saving & call BG (not).

Warm top cold bottom usually is down to inadequate flow thru the rad, this can be down to several things, rad balance, dirt/sludge within the rad, poorly performing pump, air or dirt or nipped pipework between the rad and its tee off's and with a top floor rad possibly lack of water within the system. Eliminate rad balance issues first, next remove the two offending rads and ensure they are as clean as possible inside. Whilst the rad is off connect a hose to both the flow and return pipes and run out a decent amount of water to ensure there is adequate flow rates and water thru it, this may dislodge air or dirt as well.

This part was somewhat tongue in cheek:

Have you checked the TRVs as suggested. What about the balancing?

    Cheers

Question still outstanding: Have you PHYSICALLY checked the TRVs for stickiness - assuming you have some which you have not, as yet, confirmed or otherwise.

Other question still outstanding: When was the system last properly balanced?

    Cheers

I have checked the TRVs & they are not sticking.

I had a heating engineer out last year as I noticed the problem then too - the system was balanced then.

Are all the other rads working OK?

What speed is your CH pump set to (I'm assuming you have a conventional system rather than a combi?)? If its on 1 turn it up to 3 and see what happens - do these two rads warm up now?

If not and if all other rads working OK go round and turn all the TRVs down to off or the frost setting whichever is the minimum setting. Do NOT touch the lockshield valves as these will have been set when the system was balanced.

Return the pump speed to previous setting, turn on the heating and see if that makes the two recalcitrant rads warm up. If not turn up the pump speed once more.

Tell us how you get on up to this point.

    Cheers
