, I've taught myself some basic HTML and now have a domain name etc, all thanks to a couple of videos from Tinkernut.com .
Now, I have a spare low spec PC, and have re- installed XP pro and added wampserver .
The idea is to run a basic website for family and friends, bit of a blog and a place to share pictures.
It's more of an exercise to see if I can make it all work, rather than getting to No 1 on Google.
Is my usual Avira sufficient?
If not, what do the experts here recommend?
Presumably, a 3rd party firewall, it's behind a router and I generally stick to Windows firewall.
Just for now Linux is not an option.
As usual, I won't be able to reply until tomorrow evening.
Cheers R

I dont think you need a wampserver if your only going to be using basic html in that case a basic apache server is required for that. Saves you installing phmyadmin mysql and php etc. A normal windows xp firewall is decent enough security if its only for home use.0

There is even a 120 free home trial of MS Home Server to be had. Seems to work fine, in fact just now, my son is just running up his old box with the very same.0

Cheers guys, Nothing to worry about then.
I see in the Apache log various requests, it's fairly obvious when someone I know has visited, but I'd like to understand some of the other entries.
For example
"GET //phpMyAdmin//scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1"
I've tried Googling but any replies are too techie.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
that PHPmyadmin entry, i'd guess at it being something to to with the PHP coding of the site and the setup pages.
also, did you know that XP Pro has its own built in Webserver (IIS6)?0 -
No I didn't,also, did you know that XP Pro has its own built in Webserver (IIS6)?
, but in my defence, I haven't grown up with computers, and only became involved about 4 years back.
For others considering setting up a home server, have a go, I found it really straightforward with the help of these 2 videos.
I worked through them, then picked bits from each and combined it with my newly acquired domain name, and surprisingly, it works better than expected.

Forgot to add that these entries are preceded by an ip address, by Googling I've found that some of these are from China, Canada and Bulgaria amongst others. For example
"GET //phpMyAdmin//scripts/setup.php HTTP/1.1"
I've also seen that Google and Yahoo have visited.
I'd just like to be reassured that it's nothing to worry about, and it's just what's 'out there' sniffing around.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

I think that there was a security flaw in phpmyadmins setup file earlier this year, so people are scanning around looking for it to take advantage. You should always ensure that you're using the latest version0
