Upvc ceiling cladding in shower room

Thinking of putting Upvc ceiling cladding in shower room. Some threads say mount on timber battons but can it be mounted directly onto ceiling? If I use battons is it worth putting thin insulation into the gap?....or keep the gap for ventilation?
Is stainless steel staples the best way to fix?
Any advice or thoughts appreciated....
