Abbey Visa Debit Prefix 4547

I posted last week that my hubby was lucky to be approved for 3 bank accounts! Today his Abbey Visa debit card came and the prefix 4547. On the front it has the chip and on the back it has got the ''dove'' 3d thing, sorry not sure the proper name for it.

Today, he went in to order a cheque book, so I said to ask if it's a full debit card as there is no mention of the £100 CG on the card.
Asked a rather starchy chap, and he said 'they don't put the £100 CG symbol on the card anymore? Is this correct?

Thanks for that link, just say you found a retailer who still accepts cheques and CGC would they accept it without the £100 symbol?

I myself am not a cheque user, unless it's for a B&B that sometimes don't accept card payments, so a cheque has to be posted off for a deposit.
  • Hi Bosie,

The 'dove' logo that you mentioned is VISA's hologram. The usual hologram for Cheque Guarantee is Shakespeare's figure.

Abbey, in their bank statement to me in Aug 2009 mentioned that from October 2009 there will no longer issue anymore cheque guarantee guards. Those who still have one with cheque guarantee function will receive replacements in 2010.

Normally, when you post a cheque, you do not guarantee them anyway - it is part of the requirements of the cheque guarantee scheme that the payee has to fill in the details at the back of the cheque, not the payer. So it won't affect cheques sent by post. But agreed it may affect payment to a retailer, in person, who does not accept card payments.

Oh beaten to it! LOL Their procedure is you apply online and they give you a reference, then the next morning they emailed to say they'd opened him an account!
Went in today with him and so busy, no-one on the customer service desk, so hubby saw this fella in a side office and tapped on the door.
This chap didn't look too chuffed, but hubby wasn't bothered.
Just got directed to the cashiers to order a cheque book.
