  • Hi Folks,

I'm thinking this might sound like a bit of a stupid question, but here goes.

I still own my first flat (having bought a flat with the girlfriend) and am currentl,y renting it out. The rental income is LESS than the cost of the mortgage and insurance (and has been since the start) so therefore it is not an additional income above my regular salary from my employer.

Do I still have to let the tax man know about this arrangement using the SA form?

    Thanks
  • I'm starting my own part time business next month as well as working full time. My current employer does my tax. I obviusoly will have to complete a self assesment but do I have to include my full time salary pay in it to? Also do I have to pay two sets of income tax/ni?? I ain't sure.
Don't forget to register as self-employed with the National Insurance office - even if you don't think you'll have to pay any NI to start with - as there's an automatic £100 penalty for not registering within the first 30 days.
  • I have various bank accounts. As I get the tax statements through they go in a file which I then use to fill in my tax return. Some of the online only banks send me an email instead telling me the tax statement is ready to download.

Halifax have now stopped sending tax statements. If you want one, you have to phone up and ask for one. They then tell you it will take up to 2 weeks to arrive and no you can't get it online. Pretty annoying in mid-January when you are rushing to avoid a late submission penalty.

Another symptom of the worsening service from Halifax unfortunately.
