i have a vhs video recorder,and i need to buy a new digital tv,will i still be able to connect these up new tvs with an old video,and get the benefits e.g. better picture,cable compatibility

HD ready TVs still have Scart connectors so you can connect up your old VHS recorder and play back your videos. You won't get any improvement in picture quality though, unless your old TV was on its last legs, and you will see some improvement.
Chances are though if you get a bigger TV the pictures will look worse as the resolution of a VHS machine is only around 240 lines.
After the digital switch over you won't be able to record anything on your VHS machine as it only has an analogue tuner. If you are desperate you would be able to record the Digital Terrestrial /Freesat channel you are watching on your TV.That gum you like is coming back in style.0
