Time Machine Mac Question

I have been using an imac since the summer, and have been running time machine on it with an external hard drive. If I were to get mac laptop, can I plug in my time machine hard drive and move photos and music files to it, and then reattach to my imac. Thanks

Yes, but if I understand correctly, could you not also attach the mac laptop to a spare Ethernet port on the Time Capsule, in addition to the existing imac and then back-up that way?0
