Direct line refusing refund

Options
Hi guys,
My boyfriend took out a policy with direct line for his van, he told them from the outset that he would be putting more seats in the van, the woman said thats fine just call them back when he was putting the seats in, he is 23 btw.
so he called them the other day and told them he was going to put the seats in, they then told him that they dont cover modifications for under 25's and that the woman shouldn't have sold him the policy. He then cancelled the policy with no trouble but they only offered him a £44 refund when he had already had the policy for 3 months and had paid £300ish.
He called them and they said because he had used he policy they wont give him a full refund, inwhich his reply was that he wouldn't have taken the policy out if he had known he wouldnt be able to put the seats in, and the woman wouldnt have sold it to him, he asked to speak to a manager and they wouldnt let him. so i was just wondering if he had a leg to stand on.

sorry for the long post!!

  • Did he get paperwork when he took out the policy because it probably states somewhere there about the under 25 clause? I don't think he'd be entitled to a full refund if he has had the policy for 3 months already, but if Direct Line admit liability for any mistake (assuming as well that there is nothing in his insurance documentation) then I would expect a 75% refund this being the remaining 9 months.

I insured my van with direct line and said i was going to put seats and windows in making it a kombi. I paid for insurance based on modifications being done and the insurance certificate said window van so i thought all is well.

It took a bit longer to get the work done than i thought and a renewal was done so i thought i would phone them and tell them the modifications were complete and they charged me £100 and put up my excess from £150 to £400.

Never trust the phone operators and Direct line have already lost my home insurance and will lose two lots of car insurance at renewal

Insurers record a lot of calls. Contact Direct Line and ask if the call was recorded. If so, and there is evidence that the issue was discussed prior to the policy being sold, that's going to act in his favour.

Did he specifically ask them to quote for a van with more seats in? If it wasn't put through the system as a quote, then the direct line person wouldn't have known that the "compooter sed naaaaah - COUGH".

Could he not just take them out and finish the remaining 9 months of the policy?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
