Moving a piano

Hi all,

How much do you think I should expect to pay to move a piano? It's not a particularly valuable one, and isn't tuned at present anyway (someone is giving it to us for free). If specialist firms are too expensive I'm considering just hiring a man and van and roping in lots of boys. Has anyone done it this way? It's not going up or down any stairs.

If it's untuned a man and a van. Don't really need many people...just something suitable to roll it on if it doesn't have any wheels. Although might need to be man-handled around corners etc. Though is it a grand or upright?
We pretty much gave away my old nan's piano on ebay when we sold their old house. The buyer of the piano and a few people turned up with a builder's van and bundled it in.

ive moved a few in my time. no real problems. plenty of old blankets and a van.
ive even moved one on my own!
got it given to me via a special school that was upgrading the piano.
lay it on its back on the van floor (rear edge), then lift and push it in.
    Get some gorm.
  • So it's ok to toss it around a bit? By which I mean is it ok to put it on its side in a lift? We're 11 floors up so my whole "no-stairs" bit is contingent on it being ok to put it on its side!

    yes. within reason.
grand pianos are shifted on trolleys/bogeys all the time, on their sides.
    Get some gorm.
  • Awesome. Man and van it is. Now the only headache left is to find a good one - last time we chose a random guy off gumtree who left us outside ikea for 4 hours while we grew increasingly afraid that he wouldn't come at all!

How about cutting it into 3 or 4 pieces and taking one piece at a time to its new location, then simply glue it back together,if you have a big car you might get away with a straight cut in half, saving on petrol and glue!!
  • Its normaly around 100-150 pounds for piano moving within a 50ish mile radius.
  • How far are you moving the joanna?
