We have always insured our dogs - premium for 15 year old is just going up to £60 per month and I am now going to cancel at renewal as this is more than the cost of medication he is on. We also have to pay 10% of cost of claim. At this age the inevitable is likely to happen within the next few months so we have decided that we will fund any vet costs ourselves.

Do remember that if you take out an annual insurance and pay monthly, if your dog dies during the term of the policy, the insurers will still want the balance of the premium for the year paid.

I do agree that there comes a point where you would be better saving the money monthly so that it is there to fund treatment and by taking out a policy now you are likely to have every ailment your dog has ever visited the vet for, excluded.

Be honest - work out how much you pay each year in insurance and excess and bills you have to pay cos your insurance wont cover them - ie - existing illnesses and flea/worm treatments and then tell me you think it is honestly worth it -"just in case"

cat number 1: claimed £14,000 over her lifetime, paid out about £1800 in premiums (r.i.p)
cat number 2: claimed around £3000 over his lifetime, paid out about £1900 (still alive)
cat number 3: claimed around £3500 since i've had him (16 months) paid out about £460 in premiums (still alive)
rabbit: claimed around £5000 over his lifetime, paid out about £1600 in premiums (r.i.p)

that's a DEFINITE vote for FOR pet insurance from me. i would be in hock to the credit card companies by around £20,000 (or worse - had to put my pets to sleep because i couldn't afford their treatments), if i did not have insurance.
