I don't think the heat of a heat lamp or the infra red thingymajig is going to be significant enough to soften paint. The time taken with a high wattage bulb on is going to be enormous in my opinion.

well, I have old victorian doors that have been kicked about and painted and repainted until they are clogged. I want to strip them down and fix them up then repaint. I want to do it in the least damaging way possible so as to preserve them.

Get them dipped in an acid bath. It's the only thing that doesn't leave burn marks / wreck the moulding with wrong size / wrong profile scrapers etc.

I had a full set of original doors that had been scumbled and 'grained'. So long as you let them air dry for several days before sanding / sealing them - they are fine. Mine looked amazing when finished - only shame was the average 3 days spent on each door! But I did have to fill some thousands of wood worm holes the scumble had been hiding.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • but doesn't an acid bath eat away at the glue that holds them together?

    Was an acid bath expensive?

Also, I've heard good things about this foam called Nitromors All-Strip Mousse - does anyone have good experiences with this?

If you're after an environmentally friendly paint stripper you could try 'Homestrip' from the Green Building Store -

    http://www.greenbuildingstore.co.uk/np-strip.php

Works best if you score the top surface of the paint with stanley knife first (not too deep mind).

Could work out costly if you're doing entire doors.
