Nationwide CC, is this still the best one for foreign transactions ?

I'm off to France on holiday later this year and I'm thinking of getting a Nationwide CC to use while in France. Is this the best course of action ? The NW Classic card also offers 0% for 9 months on purchases which will be handy as I can then spread the holiday spending repayments. I'd like to take as little currency as possible and use the CC for as much spending as possible.

Anyone know roughly how long NW take to process CC applications, my mortgage is with the NW, I don't know wheter that will impact the application at all.

The Nationwide sent me a flyer offering me a guaranteed cc as I had a mortgage with them :)

Yes Nationwide is the best for foreign transactions, however NOT for taking money out of ATMs. However watch for Dynamic Currency Conversion.

  • I just came back from france yesterday.

I used the debit card 3 times, everytime i draw 400 euro.

    On my statement it show

    276
    275
    274

    When in pounds...

Looks to me the euro is dropping....

    Anyway, it work out to be around 1 : 1.44 - 1.45

Which is the BEST I ever see... I have compared it with almost all the high street exchange...

    Hope it help.

I used the Nationwide visa debit card not CC.
Too about 2 weeks in total from apply to get the card.

Could you please advise what dates these withdrawals cleared on your account on? Based on forex rates, yes, Euro was falling, I would suggest you did it on 08/06, 09/06, 12/06 respectively. If you did it later, then Nationwide is better than forex, that would be unbelievable!

I used the NW Credit Card a few weeks ago and got on average 1.45 euros/pound. As "Pin" says watch out for DCC - always make transactions in Euros, the DCC rate recently is just under 1.40.
One other oddity with the Nationwide credit card is that if you set up a Direct Debit to take the minimum payment and then make an additional payment, they will not take the DD (they only take the DD to make uo the minimum payment). This can catch you out if you are trying to pay off the full balance and avoid interest chanrges.

Just applied 5 minutes ago online. I am a mortgage customer so did the application within my log-in, and got approved, given the credit card number and credit limit straight away. How cool is that? Not sure if it would be different for new customers. I am off to New Zealand in December so this card will come in useful not only for the foreign transactions, but the added benefit of not having to pay it all of for 9 months..
