When I moved into my house I was pretty broke. I went around the junkshops and bought for £15 a nicely-made 1960s plywood chest of drawers. It was unusual in that it has no handles, but a lip all along the bottom of the drawer instead. Very streamlined. Trawling the secondhand shops over the next few weeks I found a few more chests of drawers and also two bedside tables, all of the same design, all in different shops, and each piece cost £5, £10, or £15. I then painted the whole lot in an offwhite eggshell and they looked fabulous when seen together -- almost like fitted furniture. Ten years on they still look as good.
I get a great deal of pleasure knowing that the entire "suite" only cost me about £50 and that I have got solid furniture that is so strong you can stand on it, and drawers that don't fall apart or get stuck, ever, when others have paid many hundreds of pounds for chipboard covered with paper that look crap after a few months.
