Halifax Credit Card - Payment Error - Help Please?

After a little advise here if you would.
On the 14th of November I changed the way I pay off the balance of my Halifax Credit card from Manual each month to Direct Debit. I completed this task online. I then assumed that I wouldn't have to worry about it and I could let it do its own thing each month clearing the balance from the credit card. Last week I was getting messages left on my answer phone saying "This is an important from Halifax message for Mr.... if you are Mr.... please press 1 to confirm" Then the message ends as the automated call was meant to of been answered by a human. I called them straight away and to my amazement my account was in arrears. I tried to explain that I had set up a direct debit and that I couldn't see why the payment hadn't been taken. He told me that the direct debit wasn't due to start taking payments until January. When setting this up online there was no mention of this. To avoid argument and to stop fines etc piling up I paid the overdue amount, late fee and estimated interest and ended the call there. I now have a black mark on my account for a late payment which I would of had no problem making had I of kept it to manual payments (Haven't had any late fees etc in years). Halifax have also wiped out my credit limit and reduced it to £100 which I think is ridiculous.
I wanted to get some other peoples advise on what steps to take next before I get wound up talking to some muppet on the other end of the phone.
Thanks Guys

When you set up a direct debit you should always wait until your statement says payment will be taken this way before you change how you pay.0

I hate the banks as much as anyone, but even I accept that you need to make manual payments until it is confirmed for sure that they are taking money. In your Halifax accounts you can see in the DD section that the Direct Debit is set up, but even then it is not certain that it will be made in time for the next payment due date.
You really should have asked the bank if it was going rather than just taking it for granted, so in this instance I do think you are as liable as they. I seriously doubt you have much recourse.
You could try explaining it in writing to your branch manager and they may fix it, but many such managers as pond life and simply don't give a toss, so don't hold your breath about it.
Having said all that, I agree it is ridiculous reducing your limit to £100. It sounds like someone is just having a laugh at your expense. Suspending your card is one thing, but a limit like that is plain daft.
If your credit it in a reasonable state I would try elsewhere, but in general terms I doubt one late marker will make much difference.

Any tips on how to approach this over the phone tomorrow. I'm not expecting them to waiver the late fees and black mark, although it would be nice. I do however want them to reinstate my previous credit limit as £100 is not even worth having.0

I would grovel basically and apologise profusely and promise it will never happen again0

I've done this recently too, and clearly remember being told to continue paying by other means until my statement shows the payment will be taken by Direct Debit.0
