I'm buying a house soon, Countrywide are acting as my financial advisers.
They found me a quote for building insurance from Axa at £283.92
They also found me a quote for contents insurance from Axa at £220.92
The house I am buying is in the postal code of Liverpool L13 and is valued at £110,000, built 1935 and is a mid terrace.
I have never had building or contents insurance before. The house has standard locks on the front and back door (no patio doors). It also has a decent alarm system, and smoke alarms. There is no risk of flooding etc. I am the only occupant, but my mum will be checking (cleaning;)) the house during the day times while I am at work, btw I'm 38.
I don't require any insurance for personal possessions ie laptops, cameras etc. I'm not bankrupt or defaulted on any credit agreements.
So does the quotes above seem expensive?

Sounds fairly expensive to me.. but different areas make insurance prices vary massively.
Have you tried confused.com / moneysupermarket / comparethemarket.com???0 -
Wow, that is expensive, i only pay £210 for buildings and contents combined.
Look for your own insurance.
Try the CIS, (Cooperative insurance Society) thats who i'm with.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
L13 and Liverpool in general are considered high crime areas by insurers - hence the high quotes.
Check your policy (or quotes if you look for alternatives) to see what they say regarding locks and alarms. Many insurers will insist on British Standard deadlocks and key operated window locks in this part of the country.
Personal possesions cover also covers watches, jewellery (up to set limits), clothing, cash and credit cards. Are you positive you do not need it?0 -

Pretty sure I don't need personal possessions cover. I don't carry much cash, don't have any credit cards, don't wear jewelery etc. I'm very careful in what I do and don't tend to put myself in situations were I might lose/damage things.
The house is secure and is in a neighbourhood watch area, I'm a sad sod who'll probably join it and become an active member.
I've just filled out the online form on the Axa website and it says you get upto £1,000,000 free house insurance as part of their quote, £281. So I don't know how she got the separate quote for house insurance at £283.92 in my original post.Axa
£1,000,000 buildings cover as standard.
We give you a standard cover limit with our home insurance, so that you don't have to calculate the exact cost of rebuilding your house, as long as you're sure it would be under £1,000,000.0 -
Athlete, if you are in Old Swan try a local Broker - they'll get you a better deal. There's a few in your area - the biggest is probably Choice Quote on Green Lane.
Don't sign the Axa one until you've checked others, if this is your first house make sure you don't get suckered on the insurance - get a few prices first but don't just go cheapest - make sure the cover suits you, that's why you would be better going local for your first policy - at least then a Broker can explain it all to you and help you choose what's best for you.
What do you need £1m cover for? Even the Coconut Grove wasn't worth that! (You'd have to be from L13 to understand!)
Good luck mate. All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0 -

Good luck mate.
My head was chocka at the time because she was sorting my mortgage out etc at the same time and was passing me lots of things to sign. The appointment took 3 hours at the end of the end of a long day and I was tired and starvin'
I've dropped her an email to clarify the quote again, if it is £504 for both pa I'll take the £25/50 cancellation charge to save more money over the year.
Btw you're showing your age mentioning the Cokey;)
Whereabout are you from?0
