What the best flooring for kitchens and bathrooms?

I used a lovely wood effect one in my living room, its looks real nice and has stood the test of time 3 years on.

Is is ok to use it where there will be water and spills? If not, whats the best floor type?

Also, I am looking the the vinyl I used in the living room. My local warehouse not longer stock it. I would really like to use this consistently throughout my home, its made by Tarkett.

Does anyone have ideas on how I may get hold of this? I am in South East London.
Thank You!

  • Laminate flooring can be damaged by spills - it may dark coloured over time. Lacquered solid wood shouldnt be damaged from these sorts of spills though.

If you google "Tarkett vinyl flooring" links to sites which sell it will come up and the sites will have pictures of the designs. Hopefully your design is still available and you can find it. Some offer free delivery if you are happy to buy online.

I have vinyl flooring in my kitchen and bathroom. It is warm enough underfoot (warmer than tiles) to go barefoot to the bathroom during the night and not be cold if standing for longish periods in the kitchen in winter. I've had no major spills, just the odd splash from the basin or sink and there's been no problem. Vinyl needs to be laid, preferably, before the sanitary ware is installed rather than cut round the toilet, pedestal, etc. When laying in the kitchen, either lay before the units are installed or make sure it goes beyond the plinth under the units a little way. It probably wouldn't fare too well if your washing machine/dishwasher had a major leak and the water got underneath the vinyl.

The only thing I would say is if you drop something you may cause visible damage. In my old house we had light wood effect vinyl in the kitchen and this did get a cut in it when a knife was dropped, also OH dropped a tin of baked beans which cut the vinyl. In my present kitchen we have a slate tile effect vinyl and must have dropped something on it and it has "chipped" a small amount of the top surface off so there's this small white patch on a basically black floor (I touched the spot up with black permanent marker and it's virtually unnoticeable now).

On the other hand if you drop something on a laminate floor you're likely to damage the laminate. Likewise with tiles, it will either damage the tile or if it's a plate/cup then that's likely to break.

I don't think there is a perfect floor covering, you just need to decide which one you are going to be most happy with that comes within your budget.
