Balance transfer for unemployed?

Hi all
I've been unemployed for a year now.I have an MBNA platinum card (APR 15.9%) My credit score is good and I've kept up with the minimum payments on the card since being laid off. There is no sign of a job so I'm now looking for a balance transfer,I currently have £1500 on the card.I realise I will have to pay a much higher APR because I'm out of work, can anyone recommend a company where I'm likely to be accepted?
Cheers.

Why would you want to transfer your debt to a card with a higher APR? I very much doubt you would get a 0% card because of your current circumstances. I would just keep plugging away at what you have at the minute.
  • My savings are all but gone so I'm looking for a 0% balance transfer,I'm not too bothered if the APR is higher,I can always switch the balance again when the free period is almost up

If you can't afford the minimum payments then instead of trying to transfer the balance (and paying more in interest) you may be better trying to negotiate with your credit card provider. You could write to them and explain your circumstance and offer reduced payments or just token payments until you find work (at the same time you could also ask if they will freeze interest & charges on the account).
This may result in a default on your credit file but is better than getting yourself further in to debt especially with no job.

I expect you would be unlikely to get a 0% BT card with no job.

  • This is why I havent informed my lender of the situation,I don't want a bad credit score.I have seen lenders out there with balance transfer for people unemployed, but the APR is instant and over 30%!
  • First off, Phone your card issuer. No need to tell them of your circumstances just yet and ask them if they can reduce your APR. You may find that if you talk to them nicely and with respect that some will do that quite readily.
I doubt any prime lender would give you credit at this stage.
