Your money should have been held in a deposit protection scheme. Unfortunately, the law can be difficult to enforce and I suggest the Citizen's Advice Bureau (CAB) could be a useful place to visit. You may be able to claim 3 x the deposit in Court.
I wish you well with your claim. I hate landlords and letting agents that let the rest of us down.

It is the landlord who is responsible for lodging the deposit with a scheme and the landlord who is responsible for returning your deposit. Forget the letting agent, send a recorded delivery letter to the landlord stating that you are going to pursue action through the small claims court for three times your deposit.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0
