New house - BT line disconnected??

Recently purchased a vacant property. Checked phone line which had dial tone but not able to make calls. Contacted BT and asked if it was their line. Response was 'yes, it has been disconnected'. I tried to explain that I was the new owner and what my options were, but the lady (indian call centre) didn't really understand what I wanted.

So here it goes: I want to use another provider for the line, but am I right in thinking that they would require the line to be re-activated by BT before they can proceed? If this is the case, will BT charge me to re-connect the line if I didn't want their service? Also, if there is already a dial tone, is its costly for BT to re-connect?

Any advice?

If they can charge you the line rental then they can reactivate the line. I say can, many choose not to do that as part of their service. If BT reactivate it they will put you in a 12 month contract with them for line rental.

Go with the Post Office. They can sort this out without needing BT to deactivate.
