Change of Circumstances for Child Tax Credits

Hi

I have phoned HMRC this morning regarding a change in circumstances for child tax credits (me and my partner have split up:embarasse. I gave in all the details over the phone and they have stopped my current claim but could not tell me how long it takes to process the new claim. I was wondering if anyone could advise me? As I have 4 month old twins and with christmas coming, I dont want to be struggling for money.

Thanks

  • Difficult. You could ask if they could hurry it through because of possiblehardship withthe young children, but whether they would help or not ......... Try.

If you get no joy get hold of your MP to put pressure on, they often respond to that. it's the Children + Christmas Aaaah factor.

    It worked for me.

    Cheers, HG
  • I had to do this about a year ago. They cancelled my claim when i phoned and changed my circumstances and my new claim was sorted within days, I think it depends on how busy they are, hopefully you will be as lucky as I was and have it sorted before christmas!

Did they process a new claim over the phone or did they tell you they were sending out a new claim pack?

I did this in February and it was sorted in about a week.

I can see why you are worried and you could maybe do with a back up plan in case it takes longer to sort.

Do you have relatives who could help out and have you sorted child maintenance yet?

Normally new paper applications can take up to 4 weeks as you have done your over the phone you have cut out the "middle man" so should (in theory) be shorter. It can take around a week but sometimes longer if there was a problem.

I would call them back next Tuesday and ask for an update - hopefully your payments will be recalculated for you and if not you can ask if there is any other info you need to provide them with.
Hopefully sorted out within the week for you.
