Howling hot water tank!

 My hot water tank is making a 'howling' noise every so often. The system is less than 3 years old and is powered bu a gloworm 12hxi boiler. The noise is only when the heating is on...not when the water is on. The boiler is set to max (the 'radiator' symbol) and the tank is set to 60c.
I must confess that i don't know what these 2 should be set at for maximum efficiency, and i'm even less sure i've got it right now that the tank is making this noise. Money is very tight so i can't really afford to call anyone out to look at it. Therefore any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds as if your boiler rather than the tank is kettling, also check the tank 'stat is working properly.
You could turn the boiler down a bit to see if that helps, you could also inject some Fernox F2 Boiler silencer into the system.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
