expansion pipes going into the tank

Our boiler packed up 2 weeks ago and we got plumbers in. They put in a new pump, but heating still didn't work. They then put in new boiler but it didn't work and now say that they need to put in new pipework.

Everything has been clogged up with grit.

The original boiler and radiators were only put in 3 years ago. The pump was making a noise when 1st put in and the plumber said it was just some dirt going through the system. He didn't come out the following year when we asked him to check some noise and to service the boiler.

This time when the boiler went wrong I got in different plumbers and these are the ones who have fitted the new boiler etc.

They say that the original pipework was not done in the normal way - that the cold feed pipe was in the wrong position, creating air drag.

They say that the expansion pipe was lowered into the tank to try to stop the air coming in.

I know nothing about central heating - is it likely that the person who originally fitted the heating 3 years ago was wrong? Is it likely that the way he did this piping has caused the problems this year?
