  • Thanks Atush. :) I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something glaringly obvious that I missed.

It makes me feel sad, but the cash number for my pets will probably be a lot lower in ten years time as some will have died by then.:( We might look into fostering animals once we are both not working.

PS I assume where you are quoting yearly income, its after tax ?

£1500/month is about 22K before tax.

    Regards

    Jerry

It is less than that because you do not pay NI. £22k would give you £1650 from a pension.

Yes and in my case another 5.5% so to earn £1500/month I would need a salary of just over 23K. Its often not clear if people include this or not when quoting pension salaries.

At the end of the day the important figure is the monthly actual income you get from your pension.

  • wow ....lessons to be learned from that "groceries budget" of 2k per year .
that seems very low indeed . what do you eat ?
    home grown veg?
we are spending 3 to 4 times that.....can feel cutbacks in the air

    In a word : Aldi

Back in the day, we lived round the corner from a Tesco Superstore, and groceries were indeed 3-4 times more (but with 2 hungry teenagers raiding the fridge constantly). These days it's just the 2 of us; 1 Aldi shop per week, no "top ups", OH cooks everything from scratch, no ready meals, and the fridge & freezer are constantly stuffed with delicious grub.

Should also clarify; alcohol sits under "Personal Items" budget line, rather than groceries, as OH doesn't really drink.
    Save 12k in 2013-2014-2015-2016-2017-2018-2019-2020-2021-2022 - then early-retired.

Shame really, as not drinking probably increases life expectancy which in turn increases the 'number'. I won't be falling into that trap!

Oh yes, if you cook from scratch Aldi and Lidl make it easy to feed two on £40pw (Aldi's Greek yoghurt and Lidl's luxury muesli can't be beaten).

Nowadays cooking from scratch tends to be regarded as a virtue rather than a life skill, which is a shame when you consider the health and obvious financial benefits.

Aldi and Lidl are great- I fill my car full there every time i go across to the mainland. I can save a load on basics. I even savedd a wee bit of space int he car on the way back from france (boot was full of wine, beer, Confit, olive oil, jam, mustard etc).

But they dont have a wide range, so dont have everything i'd need. Esp as I cook from scratch. Because I cook all over the globe lol.

Yep, I love my local Lidl, but if you asked me to feed myself from there only I'd be going crazy within a week. Fortunately autumn is upon us and the game stall on my local market will be my main source of meat for the next few months...

I have rabbits, partridges, pheasants, wood pigeons and hares in my garden. But I dont have a shotgun lol.

Maybe I should get a license and live off the animals going past my living room window.

Game would be limited to winter but you could easily do it for a few months and freeze some of it. Not that great for eating though unless you have a good set up for hanging the meat and know what you are doing.

I like the idea of buying a cow or a pig - I know there are places you can do that these days. One of each will be enough for many months of meat for a couple.
