Ladyfriend needs help with finances!

My lovely new girlfriend is perhaps a little younger than me and we've been talking about finances with each other. She is in the very fortunate position of having absolutely no debt, a little in the way of savings (£160) and just reached 17...
She has no financial sense, hates figures and although has had many jobs (many of which probably she shouldn't have had).
So she's a clean slate who's willing to be written on!
She'll be getting a new job in the next few weeks and part time organises and publicises music events - she gets paid a fair bit for these (as she says, a weeks worth of work in one day)
Her mum has bonds in her name, but we have no idea of their maturity or value. She doesn't speak to her mum anymore due to family strife. So if you know whether or not since they are in her name she has any claim it would be fairly useful!

fingers crossed its in gfs name not mothers but she has all the paperwork, so we don't know even how to go ahead finding it out. The relationship is very, very tetchy at best and it is very unlikely she (the mother) would volunteer it even though she may be unable to claim it herself.Tim0
