Back billing edf gas
Moved into new build property & as I thought told edf elec & gas that I exist.
Didn't get elec bill for nearly 2 yrs which was back billed to about 10 mths after I moved in - credit given for earlier time.
Last Dec I registered by Nectar card with elec.
In late summer this yr I get gas bill for my home sent via my housing assn for over 1k. I contact Housing assn who apparantly then told edf of my existance & I told edf at same time again.
I then get gas bill sent direct to me but upon inspection it's not for my meter!
It takes several attempts & 1 letter & 1 email to edf to get them to stop sending me red bills based on wrong meter & for them to produce a bill based upon my 2 gas meter readings I've given them.
I ring edf once the "correct" bill is in & I'm told that for the remainder of bill from Feb 07 (moving in date) all other readings are estimated based upon my readings.
I query why I'm being back billed to Feb 07 & why doesn't the billing code charter apply, with them not being able to charge more than 1 yr.
They claim that I've never notified them of my existance for GAS, even though they've known about me for electricity for over 1 yr.
I counter balance that by saying I told them I moved in, which they can not find any telephone record of. I then argue that edf have failed to provide valid readings &/or made any attempts to read meter since moved in. They claim they believed they had correct meter information given to them & would only know if wrong meter if I had contacted them.
I then said I did, but not known meter was wrong until got gas bill. Then adding that if they were claiming that because they didn't know of me is why they refuse to not back bill for gas then their argument is flawed as they didn't back bill me for electr.
Anyway this went on for apx 25 mins on the phone. The adviser claims that if I persued this further that edf will maintain I didn't inform them of my being here hence back bill rule not apply, & if I went to Ombudsman they'd likely only give £75 compensation. However he was provisionally (subject to him checking with superior) prepared to offer £100- £150 off bill of £948 & 2 yrs to pay the rest.
I can see his logic in that I didn't continue to persue edf for a gas bill after I told them I existed, which he claims I didn't.
If I went on & took edf on what do folk think of my chances of "winning" - that is only being charged 1 yrs of gas?
I think I'm right, but can't prove I told them in the begining I was here.
What do others think?

.. 1 email & 1 letter & umpteen phone calls to them to get them to actually send me a bill ...
Do you have a copy of that email? How about proof of posting of that letter?
(Although neither are absolute proof of receipt)
Best is a signature on delivery service
Then again, have you asked for the recordings of those phone calls?
Or perhaps you didn't actually inform them afterall ..."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -

Then I would provide copies of the evidence you have to the supplier"Now to trolling as a concept. ....
