Where is it more important to have lots of space - upstairs or downstairs?

I havent seen a new build that ticks all the boxes :( We need bedroom space as we have lots of kids to fit in, we need living space simply to be able to sit and eat dinner together (a shocker in this day and age I know but we still eat together) or sit and watch tv together. We also like a decent sized garden for the kids to play in. Play parks are too few and far between, let alone issues of glass, dog muck, vandalism etc. Im not a minimalist so like walls strong enough to put shelves on and not worry about them falling down and pulling off half the plaster with them (another shocker - I like to put things on my shelves!!). I've got to say I think its heartbreaking to see so many old properties demolished instead of renovated. All so the developers can fit more properties into the space. Best house I lived in for size was a victorian end of terrace - big room sizes, high ceilings, 50ft garden was enough to fit all the kids stuff in etc, just wish I could've found something like that this time around!

    I think space is relative.

What would you consider to be large or small?

Our ideal place would have been two large reception rooms (one for dining) and three large bedrooms. However, we're not loaded and are first time buyers. Within our budget we saw properties that had one or the other. One of the properties viewed had a box room just big enough to fit a cot in with the door just clearing the cot.

Our main priority is to buy near a half decent primary school, and for this we have to sacrifice on space and comfort. Although, being our first home it's not too bad. Three bedroom mid-terrace (prefer semi) with one reception room. Kitchen wasn't huge either but it's enough for us. The box room is large enough for a single bed, cupboard, chair and bedside table. The master room also has an ensuite with shower. There is planning permission to add a conservatory/extension to the back of the kitchen (which currently has patio doors) which we are thinking of using as a dining area when we get round to doing it.
  • Just the two of us adults (and 3 cats) to contend with and we are in the process of moving house too. We have viewed almost 50 houses before finding the right one.

Currently we live in an 1870s 4 bed semi which has very large rooms, and 2 additional attic rooms. We bought it to accomodate family when they visted (for a few days at a time) so at the time bedrooms were the priority. We currently have one very oversized living room that then goes through into another oversized dining room which leads to the kitchen.

Our social life revolves around friends and dinner parties and the family have actually moved closer to where we live to we no longer need 4 huge bedrooms. Circumstances change so criteria for the new house was a bit different.

We wanted much more living space as thats where we spend most of our time. must haves were 2 living rooms a kitchen diner or separate kitchen and dining room. We only really wanted 3 bedrooms, only 2 of which would be used as bedrooms the third would be a study. My must, must, must have was at least 2 toilets.

We have managed to find (after extensive househunting) a semi with 4 bedrooms (so I get a study and my husband gets a study and 2 are used as bedrooms) the main bedroom is very large and ensuite which is a bonus. 2 living rooms, a separate dining room and kitchen a downstairs cloakroom and a full bathroom on the first floor.

As we love entertaining the living space was far more important this time round, but it took a lot of viewings before we found the one that fitted the bill.
