  • head and shoulders or fairy liquid :)

always use a shade lighter than you want, even us hairdressers have to do that ie for a light brown use a dark blonde
  • Whatever u use, remember to condition your hair well afterwards.

Very pleased with the H&S recommendation. I have the most incredibly variable results with hair colour when all I ever try to do is try to dye my medium brown hair, medium brown to get rid of the bits of grey. Anything with a red tone goes VERY red (probably due to my Irish origins). You'd think that always going for the one that simply says 'medium brown' would be OK but, no, sometimes it goes very dark indeed!

My hairdresser reckons no-one should ever go below a '6' in a dye. If it isn't dark enough, it is easier to go a bit darker. However, the hair dye brands don't all use the 'standard' numbering so it isn't always that easy to do. And the colour names don't help. My favourite colour in my favourite brand is called 'marzipan'. Yet to see brown marzipan so go figure!

Just thought I would add that in future if you wish to have a nice mid brown colour with as little red as possible Nice n Easy Light Ash brown (114) could be worth look at, I use it and like you get a lot of red (yep the Irish thing:rolleyes:) usually but this is a nice even plain but quite rich looking flattering brown, not too dark but dark enough and all grey is magically gone away:T
Thank you for this site Martin

  • THis happened recently to my DD it was supposed to be chocolate brown and it went black, rather than having her hair stripped and drying it all up she had caramel lowlights loads of them put in and it looks really good, she is having some more lowlights put in next week as well s this does not dry the hair as much as stripping it.

Thank you, glad to help:DI worked in the beauty industry when I was young for a couple of years and didnt like it much, then I discovered writing about things 'normal' women would find useful (I used to write a beauty advice column) and love it, I could bore for England on the subject, I dont do it for a living anymore (not enough money for me) but still like to help when I can:)
