CCTV DIY install help

I tried posting in the Techie forum but now need some preadvice on fitting a CCTV system.
i was planning of doing a DIY install of a CCTV system kit similar to the types sold at maplin or seen some on ebay (any suggestions welcome).
However, i was off put by the BNC cables which come at preset lengths with the BNC cables connectors pre-connected the cable. As these connectors are about 12mm diameter meaning i would need to drill a hole large enough through house brick walls to thread the cable through, was off putting.

If anyone has ever done this some feedback welcome. I was hoping that the connectors could be cut off, so i could just thread the BNC cable through only (meaning smaller diameter hole) and reconnect at other side. Maplin said it is not possible with these connectors.

Doing some of my own research these cables seem similar to the TV coaxial type cable, therefore are connectors not just similar???
any help welcome, or if anyone knows what professional CCTV installers do?

  • You can buy self assemble BNC plugs, but IIRC you need to buy a pair of spanners to finish the job. I would leave the Maplin connectors outside and the DIY ones inside. I would also consider taking the cables through the soffitt into the loft

    thanks for reply.

Why do i need spanners? (i have various pliers avail).

Cant take cables through soffitts.....too far for cable reach and plan to route cables through the porch.

am i correct in thinking a NB connector fitting is similar to the coaxial type use for aerial fittings?
  • The DIY connectors I am thinking about screw together, and need their own special spanners, which you can get from the same place as the connectors. If you are too tight to get the spanners, you'll have to buy the larger drill :p

BNC cables are similar to TV connectors, but not compatible, mechanically or electrically. If you did use them, you could expect poor picture quality

    thanks again for help.
I did not plan to mix TV connectors with the BNC type. But if they canbe reconnected suprised that maplin/or that chap who worked there did not recommend that this can be done with the spanner.

I have seen plenty of bnc connectors on ebay, but need to see about the spanners - although this would explain why they sell BNC cable in present lengths of 20, 25m etc. But the problem is drilling a hole large enough to get the connector through the walls, floorboards joists etc. Hence why i wanted to explore option of fitting cable with no connector on end.

just spoke to Maplin and chap told me that cable can be cut but as you said a BNC connector can be fitted although he said ist not a straightforward as coaxial type.
Maplin sell 2 types of connectors - clamp on and twist on. anyone experience of either?

instructions here, of most types of bnc connector.
    Get some gorm.
  • Steer clear of anything Maplin sell these days.

They used to sell good items but now it all very cheap chong garbage at a markup of 1p to £1

However the quality is what you'd expect at that product price and people are not buying so much and returning the faulty garbage.
and Maplin are in difficulty ..... they will be bankrupt within the next 6 months

Buyer beware ......... do not buy their rubbish!:money:
