Need someone to do complete bathroom refurb just outside London

New bath; sink; floor everything.....

I advertised on a plumbing site; got myself a nice plumber then he didn't turn up. He didn't call either. Called him a few days later he'd claimed he'd gone bankrupt. So I am on the hunt for another person.

I am concerened going back to that site as half the people who responded have now got negative feedback or their account has been closed due to supspicious circumstances.

If I post on gumtree plumbers will recommend themselves. I have seen it! One guy who answered my post on the plumbing site recommended himself - he claimed use this guy he's a fantastic plumber lol.

I have a very small bathroom and saw around 5 people and they all quoted around £1000. Saw another guy last week and he quoted near to £2000, oh and £100 just to do 10 minutes of paining, yes my bathroom is that small!

It needs to be someone who is around London as I said - I'm not too far out so it would be easy to communte if they lived in London.

the only way you are going to do a complete bathroom refurb for 1000 quid is to DIY it.

I would just get prices from a few small local building firms, it really is 'no job too small' at the moment. Most good plumbers don't need to advertise on those internet sites. Also shop around and price out the fittings, tiling etc. so you can get a better idea and compare the construction price.

No no like I said I had about 6 people round and they all quoted around £1000, perhaps your bathroom is much bigger than mine or you have never had to do a refurb!

Yes will have to resort to looking locally hoping to catch a good plumber.

tbh, I thought DIY was much easier and quicker till I started doing some!

If you think that painting your own bathroom will take 10 mins, you might want to try and see if it does take that. If you've had 5/6 people round quoting the same price, that's the going price for jobs in your area.

Try asking your neighbours, work colleagues or look at local info mags. We found someone off friday-ad. No one working/living in London will choose to leave London because they can command better wages. I've seen builders commute 2 hours into London for a job.

For what it's worth just because your bathroom is smaller doesn't make it cheaper. Working in a small space where your constantly on top of yourself is harder than working in a larger space.
  • i was in a similar position being quoted 2,500 for a small bathroom , i decided to diy it , found a plumber who was a friend of my wifes dad who'd just retired , got a sparky who we knew . i myself ripped out all the old tiles re tiled it painted it etc , took me over 2 years! and it cost nearly as much , good luck with it

What is wrong with the 6 people you had come around to quote?

Glad it's not just me..year and a half and counting (not much more than painting left)...though i diyed the lot apart from plastering...just under £3k the lot ..decent quality gear and fairly substantial changes to pipework. It's surprising how all the little bits adds up.

OP doesn't tell us what's involved though..if it's a straight swap a few hundred for plumbing easily but all the ripping out, plastering, tiling, electrics and so on soon adds up if your paying someone for their labour. £1k all in sounds pretty decent to me for all that especially with london prices.
