SKY TV cancellation?

We are currently paying Sky £15/month for a basic programme package. We have very poor reception in our area so Freeview is not suitable and Sky is the only way to get a decent picture.
If I cancel the monthly subscription am I right in thinking that I'll still get basic channels? If so, does anybody know which channels you get or do they turn all channels off? I really need to cut back on everything I possibly can!
Many thanks for any replies.

Even if Sky do turn everything off [I don't think they do] a free to air card only costs £200 -
Hi,
I have the same package and also go through the same argument with myself each month.
If you cancel your subscription you will get the freesat from sky channels.
i.e. All the BBC channels, including radio.
All the ITV channels, channel 4, but not More 4 or E4.(no live Big Brother!)
Sky news, QVC and a few others.

PS you should not need to pay £20 for a new viewing card, your existing one will be downgraded. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks mcfisco and penrhyn for your quick replies. I thought I didn't need to buy the freesat card, I just wanted to check first. Right I'm off to cancel and save myself £15 a month.Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.0

Hi
I hope you don't get the person I talked to when I tried to cancel, took me almost 45mins, for her to clearly understand that I wanted to cancel. All she kept doing was offering me other packages, in the end, whenever she was talking, I kept saying, cancel, cancel, cancel. I finally told her I would stop the dd, she then told me that it didn't matter, as they would bill me.
I had to threaten her in the end, with my local standard trading officer, before she finally got the message.
It was an unbelieveable hard sell, it was as if they had been told, don't let anyone cancel.
Never again would I ever subscribe to Sky, it was a nightmare.0 -
I cancelled after a lot of hassle
I wrote a recorded letter and cancelled my dd. They eventually wrote back to me offering me allsorts to stay with them. No way, as I too found dealing with sky a total nightmare. I got fed up with the high priced phone calls etc hence the recorded letter.
I unplugged the phone. I still get the free channels and I also have freeview
I also will never, ever go back to sky0 -
The OH rang them today and they started trying to sell him other packages but he insisted that he wanted to cancel. In the end they got quite shirty with him and virtually hung up on him! Never mind, it's done now.Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.0

I would definitely cancel by Recorded Delivery letter. Saves much hassle.
