Motor Insurance Bureau

Anyone had any experience of them?

Our car (whilst parked) was run into outside our house a couple of weeks ago, the unknown driver left the scene without leaving details leaving us with an insurance claim, the car off the road for 2 weeks and a £250 excess to pay. Merry Xmas!

The police officer who attended advised us to try to claim back our excess through the MIB.

We've initiated a claim online and recieved a letter asking for copies of invoices etc etc.

We're not expecting anything, but thought it was worth a shot, as we're told the MIB is paid into by the insurance companies to help policy holders where they had been hit by uninsured or unknown drivers.

Anyone else claimed through them and had any success?

If you have fully comp insurance forget it, it's an insurance of last resort.

    Guess that's us knackered then.
  • The MIB will not pay any "material damage" (damage to your car) under £300 and then they will only pay the balance above £300. If you had a £500 excess, you'd be able to get £200 back off them, but with your excess, you can't claim.

    Sorry

I think the "Untraced drivers" is only for injury and does not cover property damage

No. They will cover property damage too, but subject to the £300 excess.

    Oscar from your link

The 2003 agreement applies in respect of accidents on or after 14 February 2003 and consideration will be given to property damage subject to the accident being reported to the police within 5 days or as soon as reasonably possible and the offending vehicle is identified. Claims will be subject to a £300 excess.

So it won't apply in these circumstances
  • Oops!!! You're right again Dacouch!!!!

Oscar I did not word my first post very well.

I remember being taught about the MIB and my tutor explained if the did not only deal with Injuries (There are exceptions) under the untraced drivers agreement then you would get certain people who had for instance damaged their own car by reversing into a bollard pretending they were hit by an untraced vehicle and claim from the MIB
