It's usually plugin/add-on related in my experience...
First thing I'd do is Tools/Manage Add-ons (That's in IE8, IE7 may differ slightly) and disable virtually every addon. Its easy to enable them again. Try it for a couple of days and see if its still hanging.

If it isn't then its probably an addon so just enable the ones you need one at a time, leaving the ones you don't need disabled. Even better, don't just re-enable the addons, but check first for updated versions.

When I was getting hang-ups all the time that were worse on certain websites, it turned out to be the Skype plugin responsible, and Googling showed up a LOT of people with the same problem.

Or, how about just upgrading to IE8 and see if that fixes it? That's probably the easiest thing to do first.

rather than take this to be faceious OP would do well to at least test with Firefox and see they get the same problem with a different browser.

They'd also do well to ditch AVG for one of the alternate more reliable free offerings eg Avast or Micrisift Security Essentials (or Avira if they really have sorted out their update server problems) and see if that fixes it too....

failing that go thru the malwarebytes/hijack this route to see if they're already infected and a virus is causing the problem (OP uses AVG so perfectly possible :p)

    Reset internet explorer

    1. Open Internet Explorer .
    2. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

Wasn't being facetious; merely suggesting that Firefox is indiscriminately superior - which it is :p.
