Oil Guzzler

Its a 3 series BMW, apparently the owners manual states a litre every 1000 miles!!!
I've spoken to other guys on the internet too and many require the same, some dont. Annoyingly enough my garage insist it requires one type of oil, and the majority of the internet guys on the BMW forum state another.
I think the garage state its 10/40 but most owners use 0/40 or something like that.
I was reading through the thread wondering if it was a 3 series..or at least a BMW.
I have a 3.0Z4 and it's oil use is something like 1L every 1000-1500 miles. I never see any blue smoke from the exhaust, or a puddle under the car. It just uses it up slowly but surely.
My car 2004 3.0Z4 SE uses 0-40 fully synthetic longlife oil. The oil change interval varies according to the on board computer but at the last service it was reset, and it came up at 15kmiles (or two years, whichever is earlier). 20k miles between changes isn't unheard of though.

I wouldn't mind betting that your car uses so much oil because the first owner drove it like an old woman and glazed the bores.0

Im not long rid of an N reg 3 Series; had it a year, never had to add oil...not a drop!
Do i win a T-Shirt?0 -
Which engine is it? A lot of beemers pass through my hands (petrol) and none of them have had an oil thirst. I would say its the norm NOT to have to top up between services and if its a bit leggy, I wouldn't be using synthetic or 0 40 or 0 30 oil in it.0

E46, 2 litre 02 plate. Automatic.
Like I say I quizzed the guys a BMW forum and there was an almost unanamous "oh thats normal" with respects to having to top it up so frequently.
I had my garage take a look at it, they steam cleaned the engine then ran it but saw no signs of any leakage. They said at the end of the day its healthy to top it up so frequently so why worry.0 -

I've been told it's normal to have to top up by around a litre every couple of thousand on my engine after it hits around 35k....mine is at 43k.

Sounds like !!!!!!!! to me. Excessive oil consumption, which this is, equals problems, as in excess clearance in a fukaked engine.
Ok all manf state that oil may be consumed. Ever wondered why?????
Just anti litigation crap, healthy engines use oil, but they don't drink it :mad::mad:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
I used to have a fiat, with the 2l twin cam engine. Below 5000rpm, it used nothing, above it drank 1l of oil about every 1000 miles. Did it from new to 100, 0000 miles.0

My 3L E46 uses about the same amount of oil (sometimes more) - its pretty normal and I think most BMW owners are aware of this - its a common topic on BMW forums. I don't think you need to worry.
I just carry a spare litre of oil in the boot and fill it up as required.0
