Error window in IE

I use XP home and wired broadband for internet access. When I connect and open IE I get the following message box:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I send the error report but the details say:
AppName: iexplore.exe App Ver:6.0.2900.2180 Mod Name:mshtml.dll
Mod Ver 6.0.2900.2912 Offset:007c800
The following files will be included in this error report:
C:\DOCUMEN~1\computer\LOCALS~1\Temp\4f1a_appcompat.txt
This then keeps the internet connection open but closes the IE window. I can then open another one and it is fine.
What is causing the problem, any ideas?

Sounds like the appcompat.txt file is corrupt (its an application conpatability file) program like registry mechanic can damage this file for some unknown reason, so its best to reset then reinstall IE and check the files.
First thing I would do is open IE then, Tools, Internet Options, Programs Tab, then click on reset web settings, remove tick from reset homepage, then Yes then OK.
Then reinstall IE http://www.updatexp.com/download-ie6.html or repair IE http://www.updatexp.com/repair-internet-explorer.html
I personally would try to repair IE first by running sfc /scannow0 -
Thanks, that seems to have done the trick. I printed off the scannow now instructions as it kept asking for disc, but after a few tweaks it seems to have sorted.0

Try setting IE back to default settings for starters..
