remember a story relating to old cars where handbrakes used to be under the dash and you used to pull it to put it on. it was referred to as umbrella hanbrake because the handle was similar. apparantly women used to drive around with the handbrake on. their excuse ''i thought it was for hanging my handbag on''

the same thing can be said for manual choke where you pull the knob out on the dashboard
