  • We have bought the Haynes manual - although it doesn't actually help him too much! We're also asking the advice of trading standards tomorrow and will follow what they say.

    Thanks for your replies

Buy your son a Haynes manual and a bag of spanners ... ;)
Was it a new scooter? If so, was it one of those chinese jobbies?

Or is it 2nd hand? If so, what make and model?

If it's Japanese I'd try one of the motorbiking forums, yeah I know it's only a scooter but the blokes on there tend to love showing off their mechanic skills, I bet your son could fix it himself.

The Chinese scooters have a net presence as well. A quick google gives http://www.chinesescooterclub.co.uk/

My mate picked up one of the Chinese ones a few years back, and we built it up in his bedroom. Bear in mind that he barely knows the operating principle of a spanner, and he was doing his own servicing in no time.

The only real problem can sometimes be sourcing the parts.

That was the case a couple of years ago, but since the chinkie scoots popularity has gone through the roof loads of online shops have sprung up selling parts, do a google for GY6 parts and you will find loads. all the chinese scooters are based on a honda GY6 engine clone.

Plus as the person above mentioned to go over to the chinese scooter club forum, theres a wealth of information and helpful people over there, if they cant help you get it fixed then it cant be fixed.

At £500 he bought a used scooter and drove it 200 miles without any issues.

I think you need to find a cheap mechanic to have a look at it - not one whose going to charge £180 to clear a blockage. Even at £30 an hour thats SIX HOURS.

I think you should focus your efforts on getting it going again cheaply, rather than finding someone to blame for what sounds like a regular wear and tear issue on an old scooter.
  • .........I think you got quite a good bargain, £1 per mile motoring.

How did you managed 500miles in 8 days on a scooter......

In any case, you bought the item sold as seen. thats the end of it really.
