i have an oil filled for my caravan (don't mock! :) ) as it generates plenty of heat while being a lot safer if kids drop a towel on it etc...
    Aww... So many opportunities!

Isn't that just power consumption, and nothing to do with heat generated?

All electric fires are, near as dammit, 100% efficient, be it convector, fan, oil filled or whatever.

Any electrical device produces heat. A 100 Watt light bulb produces light by heating the filament inside enough to make it glow. The motor in your Hoover/Dyson produces heat as it sucks, your PC blows hot air out of the back. My TV produces over 400W of heat, when in standby it still produces 0.4W of heat.

A fan or convector heater will produce almost instant heat, an oil filled won't produce much useable heat until it has first heated up the oil, then it will continue to give out that heat long after it has been switched off. There is NO difference in heat output, only WHEN it is output.
Each type of heater has advantages and disadvantages - you pays your money and.......................

Can anyone tell me what the relative merits of these two types are? I need to heat a couple of medium-sized rooms in a property I own and need to buy some free standing, plug-in units.

Would be grateful for any thoughts.

Thanks for asking the question which I was looking for the answer to!
