Best buy for External hard drive 500GB?

Hi we are looking at getting our teenager an external hard drive for Xmas. He has said a 500GB should be fine, or I guess maybe double that. What do people out there recommend? We don't want to pay over the odds, have 3 children to buy for so looking for good value.

All help appreciated

I'd just like to say that to pays to buy a reputable brand, which means there might be cheaper brands out there but might be cheap in quality too. I recently bought a Samsung Story 1TB external hard drive (USB, 3 year warranty) and so far I'm happy with it, there are some good reviews about this drive and Samsung have recently released a 1.5 TB model so the 1TB model price has come down slightly, the 1TB model sells for around £65.
  • 1 Tb drives are now a very small price difference so you would be well to consider them now and you have twice the storage space. Dont go for a cheapo no make brand, it always pays to buy good quality hard drives and in my opinion even more so when it comes to external drives if you like to keep your data :-)

Check out these offers, they are just some good examples of quality hardware, but do search round on price and check sites like ebuyer/scan/overclockers etc before you buy and dont forget to factor the cost of P+P in as Free is always good :-)

  • Thanks custardy, certainly will do. Am just looking at the 3 people have recommended now
  • After reading all the reviews, it looks as though the Samsung may be the way to go, £70 on Amazon at present including delivery. So that looks as though it is one Xmas present done. Now just the hunt for a digital camera :-)

I would go for a drive that has both a usb and e-Sata* interface ;)

*In the eventuality that you might purchase a computer with such an interface. ;)

    1) 1TB definately - or even 1.5TB if you want to spend a bit more - brands Western Digital or Samsung

    2) e-sata interface is only useful if he has an e-sata connection on his pc (he probably doesn't)

    3) dabs.com is a good site to look on
