you can but if the Xp version is genuine (for that PC and the Xp COA sticker is on the side of the case) then you can phone the freephone number and get them to sort out the authentication problem

Hi
If you decide to go the Ubuntu way, you need to download the file.
It is 'Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 32-bit'.
When you've downloaded it you need to burn it to a CD as a ISO.
You get the file from here:-
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
There's lots of instructions explaining how to install Ubuntu, this one is OK:-

Before you install Ubuntu you can run it directly from the CD to see how it looks.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -

Are you sure you have the right disc though? For example, are you trying to put an XP Professional key into the software installed from an XP Home disc? Or using 64 bit instead of 32 bit? Any of these combinations would probably cause it not to activate. You'd need to have the right disc for the product key.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Hi, its a genuine disk, a while back I had to have a new motherboard put in ( in pc shop) since then the original disk will not work.
Its only a a spare pc for the wife to surf the net when Im on the other one.

That's probably why, because Microsoft will probably be assuming you are installing it on a different computer, now that it has a different motherboard. If you phone them up, they should be able to give you a new code. There should be a number on the activation screen you can phone.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

There are numerous versions of Windows XP. the Main 6 (yes 6!) being
XP Pro:
OEM
Retail
Upgrade
XP Home:
OEM
Retail
Upgrade
Which one you need to install is dictated by the COA sticker on your PC - the sticker with the code on it.
It will Say either windows XP Pro or Home Edition and the version it is. If it's got a manufacturer EG: DELL, IBM etc then it's an OEM.

Seconded. Go through the Activation Wizard and select the option to do it by phone. Once you've done it once by phone then if you need to reinstall it on that computer, it'll do it over the internet.0 -

I thought I'd give linux a go.
1100 Duron processor, 256 mb memory, been running 98 with no problems, won't boot on ubuntu, and won't boot on puppylinux. (kernel panic, not syncing, attempted to kill init)
I'll give xubuntu a go now.
But windows is still winning.0
