Scottish Power should probably have informed you that they couldn't transfer your account and advised you to contact EDF. As Cardew said earlier it's likely that there was no trace of you since you hadn't registered.
Contact EDF, get your account numbers and tell them you want to make arrangements through the Fuel Direct Scheme. You'll need to contact the benefits agency with current meter readings so they can get EDF to work out an appropriate amount for current usage and arrears repayment. You then need to authorise repayments to be taken from your benefits. Once that's done you won't need to worry about it again until you get back to work. The Scottish Power paperwork will at least give you the means to work out your average usage.
Still, it's utterly crazy that it can take a company 4 years to find out they should be billing someone. Didn't anyone even come to read the meter?0
