Why is my broadband so BAD?

I'm a lodger in a house and the landlord has a wireless internet connection but it is SO bad, and i have no idea why. I don't think its because people in this house download, as sometimes i try it at 6 in the morning before going to work. sometimes i can't even connect it'll tell me my connection times out, yet other times i can download stuff at 600kbs (very rare)

right now i'm trying to watch misfits on 4od, but i can't because it buffers so badly, for about 10-20 seconds every 5 seconds of clip. i do a speed test, and it shows me this

which doesn't make sense as 4od shouldn't lag so much if that was the speed.

can anyone please help before i go crazy?

This can depend on so many factors we need more information
like router , what the other people are connected on the wireless do how many people are there, how strong is the signal strength, can you hook it up with an ethernet cable to see if the wireless is functioning correctly, if all the equipment has beens etup correctly (micro filters etc) does this happen on other people connected to the network or just you?

if the other users donwload large files alot the connection may be restricted for most of the day
from the information above id say your line may be restricted due to a fair use policy when you get a download of 600Kbs what time is it
if line speed is that slow it should just be able to run 4od but id imagine they recommend and 2mb connection this could also be a sign of your line being restricted as one one the things isp's restrict at peak times is streaming media
but again this could be harware or software this is just a guess on the information received
have you done the classic and looked for virus/spyware etc
    good luck

its the same wireless router that virgin media had given me last year... the netgear one. there are 4 people in the house, 3 laptops, 1 desktop pc where the modem is plugged in.

i thought it could be the fair usage thing, but sometimes it doesn't even let me connect, just says timeout, and then moments later it'll let me connect. the 600kbs was yesterday at 6pm. when i try it at 6am it doesn't work so it doesn't make any sense

i have a macbook, so shouldn't have any viruses

How fast is the BB supposed to be?

Do you know what the landlord is paying for?

that still doesnt justify it being so slow that i can't connect or do anything half of the time

Do you know if he is using a torrent program, or p2p software.
or using his connection as a filehost,

Ckerrd if he had a 2mb connection he wouldnt get a 600kb download, when i had 2mb max i could download was 256kb a sec. so it looks more like a 10mb connection which is limited.
Check the wireless connected, is it high, medium or low. this will effect your connection. if possible switch to ethernet cable.
Ask what connection his got, if his using a torrent or p2p software.
    and finally check your settings.
  • It could be that the landlord has deliberately throttled everyones usage....

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
"I don't think its because people in this house download, as sometimes i try it at 6 in the morning before going to work"

Hardcore downloaders will download 24 hours a day (Or from midnight onwards as speeds tend to be better)
