Huge bill from EDF - a very long story sorry!

Hi all I just wanted to share my experience with EDF.

I moved into my current house in 2005 and as the previous owners had moved to Cyprus, I had no idea who the electricity supplier was. So I thought I would wait for a bill to turn up as that would say who wanted to bill me.

After 6 months no bill and I was a bit worried that I would have a big bill when it turned up. As I didn't know who supplied me I applied to transfer to EDF and filled a form in and signed a DD form.

THey sent me a letter confirming they had received my application and my DD form. Still no bill arrived. I dutifully sent back the meter reading cards when they arrived (at a rough guess about 4 cards). I sent at least two letters asking where my bill was and told them I would only pay the bill from when my account was set up. Eighteen months went by...

Still no bill. Eventually one turned up for over £2,700 and I went yikes! It took them over 18 months to produce a bill and it was a big one! I rang them and agreed to pay £130 a month until it was paid off. As it was not my mistake or fault, they agreed to reduce the bill by about £700 which was big of them! At no point have I ever said I would not pay, only that I need time. Also they have never said that the repayment is time limited.

Then electric prices went through the roof and I was underpaying for a while. They wrote to me and I agreed to pay £160 per month. Currently I am paying about £200 per quarter off my debt.

Now they have written to telling me I have to pay it all off over the next 12 months and will increase my DD to £279 per month which I can't afford. After a chat with them they tell me that as the bill hasn't gone down much (partly due to the increase in electricity prices) either I pay the debt back in 12 months or they will put me on a pre payment meter!

Eventually I got them to spread it over 18 months and the monthly cost will be £237! I still can't afford that payment and putting me on a pre payment meter doesn't change the repayment period.

I am now looking at going to Court as I still think this is unfair as it was not my fault it took them so long to send a bill. They also had my DD for six months at the beginning and did nothing with it.

Sorry for banging on about this but it has been a very frustrating experience dealing with EDF.

Any thoughts would be welcome chaps and chapesses!

  • Hi,

Quick question - I am assuming that you took the meter reads when you moved into the property and submitted these as opening reads to EDF?
  • EDF were not the original supplier when I moved in.

I read the meter when I moved in but didn't know who my supplier was. After 6 months and no bill I trensferred to EDF. I then read the meter and filled in the card every time I was sent one and sent it back to EDF (about 4 times) before I got a bill.

Sorry to sound !!!!y but it is infuriating dealing with companies like this!
