Could a car take 1/2 a ton in the back?

  • It's only £30, until you exceed 10%.

But then you can't be given a ticket for overloading a car.

What do you mean you can't be given a ticket? Oh yes you can.

    Hire a van.

If you're carting half a ton of something around I assume you can afford to hire a van for a day.
  • Mondeo's out, going to take the Voyager. With seating for 5 adults in the back, it'll probably be better designed to take the weight.

Still check. My mate has a 3.5t Luton transit and was surprised to find it could only carry 1.2 tonnes. He found this out, unfortunately, at a VOSA checkpoint at Carlisle. All he was carrying was a fish and chipshop range and it put him 300kg overweight. 200 miles from home, he had to wait for the buyer to come down from Glasgow with another van, offload everything they could unbolt and get weighed again. Only then could he continue.

I wouldn't be too certain about that!

Max payload of the Grand Voyager is just 470kg

Yep, looks like the Mondeo can take more. I'm looking at it and seeing 1590 kerb weight and a Max mass of 2275. The 1590 includes 75kg for a driver. Thats 685 kg to spare.
Just need to find out what the axle is supposed to be able to take now.

The voyager's weight would be reduced by a good bit by removing the 2 captains chairs and the 3 seater too which may allow it to be ok.
  • FPN for excess weight only applies to commercial vehicles, ie car derived van and above. Use one of them for a car and they go not guilty you’ll look a prat when they walk out of court a free man.

Is completely wrong. Excess weight applies to ALL vehicles, whether commercial or not. Hard to convince a judge you're not guilty when VOSA have a weighbridge ticket.

    ...

These should be stated on the VIN plate

But if course that doesn't help much unless you know what the weight is on each axle before loading or better still you plan to weigh the vehicle after loading.

  • I'm curious - what are you loading into the car that weighs 500kg? Could you do 2 trips?

I once loaded up lots of bags of topsoil into a Corsa, plenty in the front footwell, and as far forward as I could get the rest - although did use all the boot (not to the roof obiously), it was sitting very low, and went a lot slower and needed more anticipation of braking - probably overloaded it!
