Philips SNA6500 router security

Hi,

I've got a Philips SNA6500 wireless modem/router, and I have managed to connect with no security. However, when I enter a WPA key, I can no longer connect to the internet. This is beginning to send me slightly doolally!

This is what I am doing:
  • When initially setting up the router, I am putting in all the details for my ISP etc, and this then lets me connect to the internet no problem
  • I then unplug the router, take it upstairs to the PC and plug it in to the PC with a LAN (at this point there is no ASDL connection does this matter?)
  • I then open the Wireless Base Station icon thingy on my desktop and go to security - WPA - then put in a passcode.
  • I then take the router back downstairs to plug it back into the phone line, and find that whenever I try to connect to the internet, I get an error message saying I cannot connect to the internet.
Any ideas about why this is happening? It's driving me mad, and I think if it's not sorted soon I will be running with a pair of underpants on my head and two pencils up my nose!

Thanks for your help.

Basically when you have entered the WPA passphrase into the router, you will then need to enter exactly the same passphrase when connecting any device to the router.

    Simples.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. The trouble I am having is that it is not giving me the option to enter any passcode anywhere. I just try to connect to the internet as usual and I get a message saying page cannot be displayed. It even says that when I try to connect to the base station thing, and I have to reset the router to factory settings and then start all over again.

Are you scanning for your WiFi network?

    Tutorial - http://www.leeindy.com/how_to_connect_to_a_secure_wireless_network2.shtml

Assuming you aren't doing something wrong...

How old is the WiFi device you are trying to connect with? Some older kit doesn't support WPA. Try WEP first and see if that ill work.

Although WEP can be cracked it is better than nothing and will deter casual access. If somebody did hack it you'd know about it because part of the crack is to force you to disconnect several times.

You really are making a meal of this aren't you!

Don't bother using WEP as your router does support WPA-TKIP encryption.

Log into your router and change the network name (SSID) to something different e.g. UnderpantsOnMyHead

Now when you try to connect to your router using wireless, you will know that it's your router that you are connecting to and you will be prompted to enter the required WPA passphrase, as it is now a different device that you are connecting to and a new connection.
