DFS, Advice needed please

Hi.
Bit of a vent at the advice given by a sales rep at DFS.
We had made our mind up on a sofa we liked and decided we wanted to buy, taking advantage of the interest free payments.
Everything was going smooth till we got to the scotch bright/ stain guard part of the pitch.
We bought a sofa in 2003 without scotch bright and it has been fine, didn't want this for our new sofa and made this clear from the start of his demo.
Any way, the bloke became dismissive and rude (obviously knew he would not be getting a commission on stain guard).
I said with the sofa we have at the moment we take the covers off (fabric) wash them, and would do the same with the new sofa ( same fabric as ours presently) .
He said the new sofa cushion fabric was lined with a fire retardant material that would MELT in the washing machine, on a 30 degree wash.
I asked why my current covers where fine to wash, he told me they where semi fire resistant!! he said the new regulations came in four years ago!
I said if we could not wash the covers we did not want the sofa. He became rude and said we would not need to wash them if we bought stain guard. He said we could not use any sprays on an untreated sofa. Not even febreze!
Sorry about the rant, the guy really got on my nerves so i walked away from the sale. Does any one know if this fire proof material that is used in ALL FABRIC SOFAS (apparently) Can be washed.
Any help greatly appreciated, we really want the sofa, wont be visiting store though will order online.
Thanks for any help, before any one asks why we are getting a sofa so quick, we are keeping the one we have and moving it to our back room, to create two living rooms.

I don't really know much about science, fire regulations or washing machines but my best bet would be that he just made up a load of random rubbish; anything to get you to buy it basically.Male.

Funny enough he wasnt that bothered when we walked away, he was more disappointed he did not get the stain guard sale than the actual sofa sale!!
I dont believe for one minute that no cushion material is machine washable due to new fire regulations.... but i might be wrong!0
