need help where to go next, ncd problem

Hi all, I've recently just searched for new car insurance as i do every year. My cheapest quote that gives me the cover i desire was with Santander so i swapped to them from the RAC. Now this is where my problems start... And just to clear this up from the start that my problem is with RAC not Santander. When i did a quote for santander i wrongly told them that i had 9 years ncd. I excepted the quote they gave me and went about my business. I then rang the RAC up to tell them to let my insurance expire on its last day. They then told me that i had only 5 years ncd (which i knew was wrong), the operator told me that it wasn't a problem if i found my previous certificate from Elephant. I wasn't holding much hope of finding it but i did and it in fact said that at the time i had 10 years ncd and with another year without a claim with RAC that i would infact have 11 years to pass onto santander. I then contacted them again and was told that because they never requested it from me at the start of the policy and that they only acknowledge 5 years ncd that this was the most that they can offer me but as a curtiousy they have given me 6 years because of a accident free year with them.
I then thought i'd attack this from another direction and contact santander about this problem. i explained i had proof from the last 2 years of the 11 years ncd which they agreed with. they contacted RAC on my behalf and where basically told the same. Santander then came back to me and asked them to submit both copies in a fax with a letter explaining the situation to see if they can give me my ncd because i have proof. I did so and did not hear anything from them until today when i recieved a letter from them requesting £9 because of the difference between the stated ncd and what the RAC say i have. I then rang santander up to ask if they had recieved the fax. they had but the board of insures wont accept the previous certificate. So i've paid the £9 to keep me legal put i really want my ncd back. It seems to me that different insurers only accept a certain amount of years ncd and to my disadvantage i've lost out. How do i get my years back as i want a more powerful car this year coming and hope every little helps.

Only an extra £9 a year?

It is not an uncommon problem as many insurers max out NCD at 5 years and many more;s computer system only allows up to 9 be entered.

If you bought from the RAC then you could only have selected "up to 9 or more" so no issues on that front. If you did it over the phone then they must have recorded the call and therefore ask them to listen to the call, add a year to it and send a letter advising what the total is.

I disagree that your issue is currently with RAC. As you said they don't ask for proof of NCD, so would have just noted 5 years being their max.

So Santander should except the combination of the RAC and Elephant details, adding a record that you have had 11 years without claiming. This is providing that cover has been continous with RAC and Elephant. This might not be in their procedures, but surely this is commonsense.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

I agree that common sense should prevail but they wont have it. they'll only except last years. i've had unbroken cover and not claimed either. I may be wrong but even if an insurer only supports say 5 year they normally pass on the relavent years if they dont claim i.e. RAC only give discount on 5 year but if you move on after a year they will pass on any ncd + 1year ncd you had with them. It's not an issue of money its more the fact i should have 11 years ncd (12 after this year) rather than 7 after this year. Is there an issurance committee that i can contact to resolve this matter??

I brought from them online. the thing is i've got proof and santander have spoken to the RAC and had it confirmed that i didn't claim with them in the last year so every thing is legit just that i've lost ncd some how...
