Aussie laptop - connection issues

I would appreciate help/info: my brother very kindly brought me his 1-year-old laptop from Australia. I've been trying to set up wireless broadband but the message is that it does not recognise the network name. We also tried connecting up his new laptop, also Australian, in the local library which has wi-fi and it said the same - network name not recognised.
Do Auusie laptops have something in them which only recognises networks in Australia?
Is there any way we can get around this?
If not, he will have to lug the one-year-old laptop all the way back to Oz at the end of his stay!

If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

It sounds like you are trying to connect to a previously used Australian network rather than creating a new network connection. You need to scan for available networks and then connect to your network, when you will need to enter the wireless encryption passphrase. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Hi, No, all networking uses the same protocols, and will work just fine. Son has brought his lappy back so I "know" and can prove it!0

I should have mentioned I have BT broadband at home. His laptop is an MSI with an Intel Core 2 Duo chipIf you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.

Not relevant. The only way that you will get 'network name not recognised' is if you are trying to connect to a previously used wireless network. You need to create an new wireless connection now. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks to all - as you can guess I'm not at all technically competent! Will have another go later this evening. If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.
