housing benefit and SMP?

ATM I am on maternity leave from my employer and don't currently get HB/CTB, reason being- I have never applied for it.
My full maternity pay runs out next week, then I will be on SMP. I currently get WTC/CTC with childcare element and severe disability element for my 7 year old.
The childcare element is due to be reduced dramatically next week (my children no longer need to be in nursery/respite so much) and the SMP will be counted on my tax credits assesment instead of my normal wages...

So if I apply for housing benefit, they will request my bank statements and see that I had more money for the previous couple of months (due to not being on SMP and childcare) as well as my wage slips, which will show full pay and not SMP, so should I wait a month of two to claim HB so they have wageslips showing the SMP only and just scrape by with less money in the mean time?

Put your application in now. Yes they will ask for bank statements covering the last 60 days transactions but your claim will be based on your current income not past income.

The claim form should have a "anything else you want to tell us" section so write a note explaining about you change in income. That way it will save the council having to write to you querying any larger deposits in your bank account.
